48 Hours in Bruges – Fashion Tuna

Belfort, Markt Square

Sometimes known as the ‘Venice of the North’, Bruges, or Brugge, is a top destination to visit. With its fairytale architecture and delicious, potent beer, this place is a dream.

Hoegaarden at BAR’N

We made a bit stop for two nights here on a drive back to Hamburg, but I could’ve stayed weeks! The pure magic in this little city is unbelievable. Waking up to church bells, wandering around looking at Christmas lights, and falling asleep happily full of beer and waffles.

Bruges, Belgium

To Stay

Hotel Prinsenhof

Hotel Prinsenhof

Located just a few blocks from the main square, this hotel is a charming boutique hotel. It features spacious rooms, some with balconies and giant bath tubs. It is also pet friendly! It is walking distance to most of the main attractions in the Bruges old city center.

Hotel Prinsenhof Bar

To Eat

There are so many cafes and restaurants around the city center! Just walk a few steps and you will find one. There are a lot of Italian restaurants, and everywhere is serving Belgian beer. It is also pleasant to sit outside in the winter because most establishments have outside heaters and blankets!

Kwāk Beer

To Do

Explore old Bruges just by walking around. This is the kind of place it is fun to just wander about and see where you can stumble on. Like a Christmas market, giant beer store (Bruges Beer Experience), or canals. This is definitely a place for exploration. There are also lots of breweries around the area. We were a bit limited with the dog and the rain, so we jumped from cafe to cafe enjoying ourselves.

Bruges Beer Experience Store

To See

The Belfort

A 13th century belfry and carillion is located in the middle of Markt square and tilts slightly to the left. It is the centerpiece for their markets and Christmas market. Tours are available and allow you to climb 83 meters and 366 steps to the top. Fun fact: apparently it wasn’t built straight and therefore leans to the left! Can you tell?

Belfort, Markt Square

Bruges is such a charming town and I would love to go back one day to spend more time. Preferably when it is not cold and raining! However, it was really nice seeing everywhere still decorated for the holidays and the Christmas market still happening. Bruges, you will always have a special place in my heart since you were the first new place I visited in 2020 and the new decade. Thanks for the memorable adventure.

The Pumpkin Festival – Fashion Tuna

The world’s largest pumpkin festival takes place every year from late August through October and is located at a Palace in Ludwigsburg, Germany known as Blühendes Barock. Each year has a different them, and this year’s theme is Fantasy! Local artists create pumpkin statues, sculptures, and scenes with all pumpkins! It is really quite an incredible site to see and definitely one to add to your Autumn Bucket List.

Unfortunately, it was raining while we were there. But we didn’t let the weather get us down!

It is a huge outdoor complex! My suggestion, pick up some Pumpkin Prosecco (it is delicious – we wanted to take some back home with us) and walk around exploring the expansive grounds.

There is also a cute cafe that had a full pumpkin menu. I tried the pumpkin soup and it was delicious. It was even topped with pumpkin seeds. Joe had the chili con carne with a side of mashed pumpkin, and he said he was great, too. With a full belly, we were ready to do some exploring.

Other activities include pumpkin carving and weighing the biggest pumpkins.

A Cide'r Doughnuts – Fashion Tuna

Apple cider season is upon us, but unfortunately there are no apple orchards near me. So, I had to make do the best way I possibly could: making my own apple cider and apple cider doughnuts. I unfortunately had to use store bought apples, ugh. It is always much more satisfying picking your own apples, but these worked just as well. I used a crockpot so the entire house smelled deliciously of apple cider.  Plus, it makes an easier way to transport it or a simple way to keep warm for a football tailgate or any fall get-together.

Apple Cider

Ingredients:

8 large Gala apples, or any apples of your choosing, cored & quartered

1 tbsp whole cloves

4 cinnamon sticks

1 tsp whole allspice

10 cups water

1/2 cup brown sugar

Directions:

  1. Place apples into slow cooker. Add cloves, cinnamon sticks, allspice, and water.
  2. Cook 3 hours on high.
  3. Mash apples. Add brown sugar.
  4. Cook 3 hours on low.
  5. Strain. Keeps up to one week, or frozen.
  6. Serve hot or cold. I prefer hot. Garnish with apple slice, cinnamon stick, and star anise. Spice rum is optional, but recommended. 😉

Apple Cider Doughnuts

Ingredients:

Doughnuts –

1  1/2 cups apple cider (use the fresh you just made)

2 cups flour

1 tsp baking soda

3/4 tsp baking powder

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp apple pie spice

1/4 tsp salt

2 tbsp butter, melted

1 large egg, at room temperature

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup milk, at room temperature

1 tsp vanilla extract

Topping –

1 cup sugar

3/4 tsp cinnamon

3/4 tsp apple pie spice

6 tbsp butter, melted

Directions:

  1. Reduce apple cider to for 25 minutes, until 1/2 cup remains. Set aside to cool.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease donut pans.
  3. Whisk together dry ingredients, minus the sugars.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients. Pour in dry ingredients. Mix. Add apple cider and whisk until smooth.
  5. Fill donut pans halfway full. Bake 10 minutes. Let cool 2 minutes.
  6. Combine all topping ingredients, except butter. Dip doughnuts in melted butter then cover in topping mixture.

Stella Plantation – Fashion Tuna

Forty minutes outside of New Orleans, on the east side of the Mississippi river lies an old Sugar Cane Plantation. This is the home of Stella Plantation. Things have changed here since the sugar cane days, but they have also gotten brighter. Not only is it still a working farm with crawfish ponds and citrus groves, it has since turned into an event venue. Not only is Stella Plantation a very beautiful and popular wedding venue, it is also great for any personal or corporate event. Last fall, 2018, they opened their first glamping cabins on Paloma Lake. Coming this fall, 2019, they hope to open the new luxury four-bedroom log cabins, complete with pool. Needless to say, they are hard at work on Stella Plantation.

As I write this, it is raining outside. I can’t help but smile as I reminisce of the gorgeous sunny days spent glamping at Stella Plantation. Days spent under the sun, kayaking, fishing, exploring, and even catching crawfish. Days ended with  watching the most incredible sunsets in front of campfires. Going to sleep to the sounds of crickets, bull frogs, and owls. Even hearing the occasional barge. It was all just so peaceful and inviting.

Glamping! I seriously had the best time. I have to say that I think my favorite thing about the whole experience was the cutest little A-frame glamping cabin we stayed in. It was absolutely perfect for a quick little getaway to reset and refocus. This is the perfect weekend getaway or quick trip from New Orleans, or anywhere really. It took us a little under three hours to drive from Mobile, Alabama. And I would’ve gladly driven farther.

The best part about glamping: NO HASSLE. It’s just as fun as camping without having to deal with a tent and everything the goes with it. The bathrooms are nicer, cleaner, and better kept than a campground. Amenities and activities included, plus a very friendly, personable staff to address any questions or needs.

*Campfire is perfect for campfire cooking. We made Frito’s Taco Bags in cast iron skillet the first night.

Then roasted hotdogs and made foil packet chili cheese fries the second night. There are also two charcoal grills available.

Paloma Lake Activities

Kayaking

Use a single person paddle kayak or a two person paddle kayak to explore all of Lake Paloma. Venture over to Bird Island, where all the birds congregate, and watch as almost all take flight.

–  Fishing

Try your angler skills with a little rod and reel fishing. It is catch and release, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun catching!

–  Bird Watching & Wildlife

We saw a wide variety of birds; they have an enormous population. We saw a lot of other wildlife as well. The first night we saw a small group of deer at sunset, then they ran through camp as we were packing up. Alligators are in Paloma Lake; we saw a smaller one both mornings while cooking breakfast. If you visit the crawfish ponds you are basically guaranteed to see some smaller ones, including little babies. There is a wildlife sheet in the cabin to check off what you see. And if you have any questions then ask Alex and Morgan, the farm managers. They know all there is to know about the wildlife in this area.

Stella Plantation Activities

– Crawfish Farming

Take a tour through the rows of crawfish ponds and try your hand at pulling out a trap. Then dump whatever is inside the funnel shaped trap into the ‘sorting rack’ (this weeds out the ones that aren’t big enough and anything that isn’t a crawfish). Rebait your trap and stick it back in the water then you pull up your next trap. If you don’t want to participate, then you can just sit on the banks and look for alligators. After all the catching is done, they will boil some up for your group to enjoy. Talk about a fun and memorable experience.

– Archery

Practice your skill with a bow and arrow. Hone your inner Katniss, lol.

– Skeet Shooting

Get ready for the hunt or just have some fun shooting. Ask about guns and shooting before coming.

– Hunting

Pheasant hunts, group hunts, they will help cater to fit your needs. Ask about guns and shooting before coming.

– Explore

Walk around the grounds of the plantation. There are giant oak trees just begging to be photographed. You can also rent out the entire main house, and the bathrooms alone are worth it.
